Der Hipparchikos , der "Reiteroberst", ist eine praxisnahe Fachschrift zum klugen Verhalten einesReiterkommandeurs im Dienste und zum Nutzen der Polis Athen in einer Phase schwindender Macht. Um 365 v. Chr. verfasst, wird auch in dieser Schrift großer Wert auf Ausbildung und Menschenführung für die Schaffung und Aufrechterhaltung von Disziplin, Gehorsam, Moral und Identität gelegt. Nichts aber gelingt für Xenophon ohne die Götter - auch nicht die Führung von Menschen!
