In Czechoslovakia, the years between the World Wars were an age of Jewish flourishing. Tatjana Lichtenstein reveals the promise, contradictions, and unintended consequences of minority nationalism as she investigates how the Zionist movement helped to establish the social and civic equality of Jews in the new country. Rather than looking to Palestine, Czech Zionists looked to Western Europe to create models for the institutions that would sustain their vibrant way of life. Lichtenstein shows Jewish activists as creative, bold, and innovative as they adapted Zionist ideology to fit their own needs and the needs of their community.
