Your Books Aren't Messy

Your bookkeeper closed the year. Every account reconciles, the balance sheet balances, and QuickBooks shows no errors. That tells you the books are consistent. It does not tell you they are right.

Your Books Aren't Messy is for Amazon FBA sellers, and the bookkeepers who inherit their files, whose QuickBooks Online books balance to the penny and still draw questions.

Three states, not two

A file is clean, neglected, or poisoned. Neglected books are behind but honest: catch-up work fixes them, and most files are neglected, not poisoned. Poisoned books are the rarer and more expensive case: someone already worked on them and made them look finished without making them right. A forced reconciliation shows as a clean checkmark. A correction that ties to nothing still balances. Neither one throws an error.

Start with the thirty-second check

One account, Reconciliation Discrepancies, should read exactly $0.00. The book shows how to read it, what a balance there means, and why what the balance is made of matters more than its size. Then the tells run cheapest first:

The tells are observed patterns from one deep engagement plus one shallower second file, not laws, and each chapter says where a read is a rule or a method instead. The book also explains why a poisoned file makes you pay three times (find it, unwind it, re-verify everything downstream: three phases of work, not a multiplier) and why the first move with damage is park, don't reverse. It describes mechanics, not intent, and it is not tax or legal advice.
