"Yankees in Petrograd, Bolsheviks in New York" examines the myth of America as the "other world." Milla Fedorova roots her study in the curious phenomenon of the pilgrimage of prominent Russian writers to America and the resulting travelogues of those joujrneys, which until now have not been recognized or studied as a particular narrative type with its own unique canons. Fedorova considers three distinct stages of travelogue - the pre-Revolution travelogue focused on first encounters with American democracy, the post-Revolution travelogue concerned with incorporating conceptions of America into the fashioning of the new Soviet state, and the more documentary-minded travelogues of the post-1930's.
