This is the story of four trips to Italy, each time with a ten-year-old grandchild, and each time to different cities and regions. We had promised that when they turned ten, we would take them on a 'study tour' so that they would grow up with a better understanding of their European cultural heritage. Their parents thankfully allowed us to do it. Our longterm goal was to help our grandchildren understand their European ethnicity in Australia: the land of their forebears' colonial immigration, of their own birth, and of our First Nations people 'long time living here'. Of course, they were ten at the time, much more interested in spaghetti and gelato. This book gives expression to our lifelong love of Italy, of Italians, of their history, their way of life, and their love of food and family, all of which we wanted our grandchildren to know and appreciate. We brought each child home intact, we trusted better educated, and we learned much about them along the way. It was a challenging adventure each time, but also a lot of fun for both grandparents and grandchildren.
