True Love and Sacrifice It was inevitable that Mary Day would one day fall in love with her handsome young neighbor, Link Harvey (it helped that they lived across the street from each other). She was sixteen at the time, and he was older-nineteen, and ready to enter as a freshman at nearby Cal Berkeley. Mary went on to Mills College; Link graduated from Cal. With WWI in the offing, the draft board sent Link to join the Army. Mary graduated from Mills, then was hired as silent film actress in Southern California. When the war in France got really nasty America joined the fight. Link went off to war, but he never forgot his love for Mary, and she never forgot her love for Link. It was a war so terrible, so murderous and so despicable that men shuddered and women wept at the very thought of it. And when the war was over Link came home, and Link married his Mary. But for some of the soldiers it wasn't over; a nation's promise had been broken, and again soldiers were dying-but this time on US soil-and Link left Mary again, to help as best he could.
