Anya is a Melbourne backpacker on a stopover in Sri Lanka before a new life in Antwerp. Within a day of landing, she has been chased through the streets of Colombo, and she checks into the Hilton with her bag half zipped and her wrist bruising.

By the pool, a woman decides Anya is exactly what her evening needs. Tara is wealthy, magnetic and lonely. Her teenage daughter, Mia, has seen it all before and warns Anya to stay away from the party. Anya goes anyway.

Told in alternating voices, Very Nice Place moves through one long, strange day and night in a luxury hotel where everything is staged, everyone is performing, and no one says what they mean.

Funny, uncomfortable and precise, this roman à clef novella examines the price of kindness, the inheritance of mothers and daughters, and the question of who gets to be rescued.
