Cette étude rend compte, ŕ travers une approche ŕ la fois économique, politique et sociale, des conditions d'introduction d'un systčme moderne d'adduction d'eau ŕ Tianjin, une ville de Chine du Nord. L'alimentation en eau des villes est l'un des enjeux majeurs de la Chine contemporaine et il est important de comprendre les circonstances historiques complexes qui ont présidées ŕ la mise en place de ces réseaux d'adduction et qui expliquent les difficultés actuelles. L'étude suit les tentatives de contrôle des différents acteurs (la population, les compagnies, les militaires, l'État, etc.) et analyse la redéfinition des rôles qui s'opčre entre les différentes composantes de la société civile impliquées dans la mise en place de ce service public de premičre nécessité. Ce travail est le premier du genre réalisé sur l'histoire de l'approvisionnement en eau d'une ville chinoise ŕ l'époque moderne. Essai de micro histoire, il exploite les sources disponibles (variées mais peu nombreuses), met en valeur les particularités locales et montre comment la population, les élites et les étrangers vivant sur place s'opposent ou au contraire coopčrent dans leur quęte d'eau.
