Calibration is the quiet discipline underneath everything regulated: the torque wrench, the pressure gauge, the thermometer in the vaccine fridge. Somebody has to prove each one still tells the truth, and prove it in a chain that leads back to a national standard. That person is a calibration technician.
Unusually for this series, a dedicated government occupation actually exists for it, and it carries a positive outlook. Most careers we cover have to be described through borrowed statistics; this one does not.
The strongest reader for it is a separating military calibration technician, who arrives with hands-on standards experience and no idea how to translate it - but the field also takes electronics technicians, instrument fitters and quality inspectors. This book explains what an accredited laboratory actually is, how scope of accreditation and traceability work, and why those two ideas decide who is allowed to sign a certificate.
There is no career book here at all - only technical handbooks and the certifying body's own reading lists. This one is deliberately built around concepts rather than clause numbers, because the governing standard revises on a long cycle and a book written around clause references would age badly.
It is honest about the shape of the opportunity: the certification is usually preferred rather than required, and automated benches have raised throughput per technician, which is why this field grows steadily rather than explosively. What automation has actually replaced is the paperwork, not the measurement. An Australian appendix covers the local accreditation regime separately.
