By 2129, the city has climbed upward out of the drowned bones of old San Francisco. They call it Meridian now, a vertical city stacked a hundred levels high on the wreckage of the one the water took. The rich live at the top, in the light. Everyone else lives in the terraces below, in a long descent into machinery and shadow the residents simply call the Pit.

Ezra Kane understood the machine better than anyone. A corporate negotiator for the conglomerate that owned half the city, he was good at one thing above all others: reading a room, finding the door in any wall, seeing the exact place where a system could be made to give. Then he made one small improvement to a scheme that wasn't his, and the machine he served closed around him and dropped him into the dark.

What follows is the story of a man learning to survive a place that filters out the soft, of the crew of nobodies he falls in with, and of the impossible job that turns a fallen negotiator into something the burning city starts telling stories about.
