Theocritus, Bion and Moschus

"Theocritus, Bion and Moschus" brings together the seminal works of the three masters of Greek pastoral poetry in a celebrated English prose translation by Andrew Lang. This collection features the "Idylls" of Theocritus, whose depictions of Sicilian rural life, mythical encounters, and amorous dialogues established the bucolic genre. Alongside these are the fragments and poems of Bion and Moschus, whose works further refined the pastoral tradition during the Hellenistic period.

Lang's translation captures the rhythmic grace and evocative imagery of the original Greek texts, offering readers a window into the idealized landscapes of antiquity. From the lament for Adonis to the rustic songs of shepherds and the playful mischief of Eros, these poems explore themes of love, loss, and the beauty of the natural world. This volume serves as an essential resource for students of classical literature and lovers of poetry alike, preserving the delicate charm and enduring influence of the Greek idyll. Through these verses, the foundations of the Western pastoral tradition are laid bare, showcasing the artistic sophistication of Alexandria and the timeless appeal of the bucolic muse.
