Someone has sent a retired judge a court judgment that does not exist.
Everything physical about it is genuine. Pre-consolidation court stock. A real embossed seal, withdrawn from service eleven years ago. Warehouse transfer marks that check out against the ledger. Only the case is missing - no docket, no hearing, no trial. And the judgment convicts a man of murdering Harold Sloane's daughter, who is alive and at work and has never heard of it.
Seventeen days later Lydia Sloane is found dead in a municipal records annex, killed exactly as eight typed pages said she would be.
Daniel Rourke spent twenty-six years as a detective and works now for the families the police have finished with. He was retained to prove the document was a cruel hoax, and he spent eleven days proving the paper was real and the case was not. That makes him the only man who read it before it came true - a witness, a suspect, and the one person looking in the right place.
Then the second document arrives. Same stock, same seal, a different name, and a date eleven days out. The name belongs to a retired court reporter who has been sitting on a twenty-year-old secret, and a man she helped convict has been in prison ever since.
Nobody in this story breaks a rule. That is the problem.
A fair-play mystery of forged records, lawful destruction, and institutional silence. Every clue is on the page before the answer is.
