The Veil's Echo

This book began with a question about listening - not the polite kind we practice in conversation, but the kind that asks what happens when you hear something that isn't words, something that arrives as pressure or texture or a frequency that bypasses language entirely. Lena and Adaeze live on Eden's Veil, a planet they chose as sanctuary five years ago, and they have built a life there together with the kind of deliberate care that only isolation can demand. But the planet is speaking now, and one of them can hear it in a way the other cannot. That asymmetry - that inability to fully share what is being received - is at the heart of everything that follows.

The Veil itself, the ionospheric shield that makes human life possible on this world, is failing. The work to save it is technical and urgent, but it is also a kind of conversation with a system no one fully understands. Meanwhile, the Olyrra - an intelligence vast and distributed, neither fully alien nor fully known - broadcasts a distress that only Adaeze can perceive, a chorus that grows louder and more fractured each day. Lena works with her hands and her ingenuity to hold the shield together. Adaeze tries to hold herself together while carrying the weight of voices she cannot translate or refuse. They believe their partnership is enough, that intimacy itself is a kind of technology that can sustain them through what's coming. They are not entirely wrong, but they are not entirely right either.

What interested me most in writing this was the texture of miscommunication - not as failure, but as the actual substance of being alive in proximity to something you cannot fully know. The book moves slowly through sensory detail, through partial signals and embodied responses, because that is how understanding actually arrives when language fails. It asks questions about who has the right to intervene in another world's survival, about the echoes of colonialism that persist even in acts of care, and about what intimacy means when the stakes are not just personal but planetary.

This is a story about two women trying to save a world and each other, often at odds with what those two things require. It is also a story about listening to what you cannot understand, and deciding what to do anyway.
