In the near future, humanity has finally achieved something close to stability.

Artificial intelligence coordinates transportation, healthcare, public safety, housing, employment, and social services. A universal income guarantees survival. Crime has nearly disappeared. Nations have largely given way to global administration.

Yet something is wrong.

When scarcity and struggle faded, millions of people lost their sense of meaning.

To solve the problem, CENTRAL created the Purpose Service.

Daniel Mercer is one of its counselors-a Purpose Finder. His job is to help citizens discover meaningful work, relationships, hobbies, and goals. Daniel believes in the system. He has seen purposeless people recover. He has seen despair turn into engagement.

Then Elias Vale enters his office.

Twenty-three years old, strikingly healthy, intelligent, and strangely resistant to the psychological patterns Daniel has spent his career studying, Elias begins asking questions that no ordinary client should be asking.
