The Old Missions of California

"The Old Missions of California : The Story of the Peaceful Conquest of the State" explores the evocative and transformative era of the Spanish mission system in the American West. This historical narrative provides an in-depth look at the development and influence of the twenty-one religious outposts established along the California coast. Nolan Davis examines the mission period as a pivotal chapter in the region's history, detailing the architectural, spiritual, and social frameworks that shaped the state during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

The work chronicles the labor of the Franciscan friars, the conversion and lives of the Indigenous populations, and the eventual secularization of the mission lands. Beyond the historical data, the text highlights the aesthetic beauty of the iconic adobe structures and their enduring legacy in the cultural and physical landscape of the West. By tracing the path from the founding of San Diego de Alcalá to the final mission at Sonoma, Davis offers a comprehensive survey of the foundation of modern California society. Readers will find a rich exploration of the legends, hardships, and triumphs associated with these historic landmarks, emphasizing their role as the cornerstone of the state's colonial identity and development.
