One of John's greatest moments came when he persuaded the ship's captain to allow the Black sailors aboard to man the 20mm anti-aircraft guns. As a Japanese kamikaze aircraft sped toward their ship, John and his fellow sailors opened fire. Their determination and skill helped destroy the attacking plane only moments before it could strike the vessel, thus saving countless lives.
