The Long Watch

Behind every badge is a person.
For more than four decades, Donald Whitehead answered the call to serve his community. From his first days as a young patrol officer in Greentown and Kokomo, Indiana, through years with the Kokomo Police Department, specialized assignments, SWAT, and nearly twelve years as an FBI Task Force Officer, his career placed him in situations most people will never experience.
The Long Watch: Reflections From a Life Behind the Badge is more than a memoir of police work. It is a deeply personal look at the people, experiences, tragedies, humor, and hard lessons that shaped one officer's life.
Whitehead takes readers behind the scenes of law enforcement-from his first uniform and the realities of police work to violent investigations, special teams, and cases involving the protection of children. He recounts the demanding years spent working with the FBI's Violent Crimes Against Children Task Force, including investigations that tested both his professional skills and his humanity.
Some stories are difficult. Others are unexpectedly funny. Some involve loss, sacrifice, and the lasting cost of wearing the badge. Through them all runs a common thread: the responsibility to protect others while remembering that every person involved in a case has a story.
Whitehead also reflects on the people who influenced his career, the officers and friends he lost along the way, the families who endured unimaginable circumstances, and the lessons that can only come from decades of experience.
From the beginning of his career to his continuing work with the Howard County Prosecutor's Office, The Long Watch is a reflection on duty, friendship, compassion, failure, perseverance, and what it really means to serve.
Honest, sometimes humorous, and deeply personal, this is the story of a life spent behind the badge-and the people who made that life matter.
