In 1309, a storm-broken vessel enters a West African river carrying survivors, a copper map, and proof that the Atlantic has been crossed on purpose. Navigator Nima Yara came with an exact mandate: one small embassy, no settlement, no territorial claim, no occupying force.

Determined to build a legacy no court can place beneath his brother's name, the former Mansa assembles a fleet large enough to become a nation. His daughter Awa, the engineer charged with keeping it alive, discovers families, soldiers, seed, law, and captive labor hidden inside the language of exploration. Exposing the truth could stop the voyage. Remaining silent could make her the architect of an empire.

Across the ocean, astronomer and defense commander Tano faces a different danger: strangers who arrive starving, armed, divided, and convinced survival excuses more than it does. When storms scatter Bakari's ships toward sovereign, inhabited shores, no single answer can contain what they have become-envoys, refugees, settlers, and invaders at once.
