The Inheritance

When Maren Ostby inherits her grandmother's farmhouse on the Maine coast, she finds a note taped to the inside of the front door:

Feed it once a week. Sunday night, before midnight. Don't open the door. I'm sorry. There wasn't anyone else.

Behind the locked room at the end of the hall, something has been waiting for two hundred years.

As she uncovers two centuries of silence-through her grandmother's neighbor, the town's reluctant hardware store owner, her mother's old letters found in a barn trunk, and a dying pastor's eyewitness account sealed in a church ledger since 1839-she discovers that the arrangement was never meant to be permanent. It can be undone. But what the undoing requires isn't property or wealth. It's something far more costly: the thing most essentially herself.

The Inheritance is literary horror in the tradition of Stephen King's New England Gothic-atmospheric, deeply human, and terrifying not because of what's behind the door, but because of everything the door reveals about the people who built it. It is a novel about what communities carry in silence, what it costs the people who carry it, and what it means to finally, fully see someone who has been waiting a very long time to be seen.
