John Bridges, a deep-sea diver working in Southeast Asia, receives a phone call that turns grief into rage. Looking for revenge, he sets sail from Japan to Hong Kong on his 29-foot sailboat, the Freewind. Typhoon Nina is oncoming. Days later, exhausted and injured, John is detained at gunpoint off the coast of Taiwan by the Taiwanese Navy, interrogated in port, and towed back out to sea and set adrift as the typhoon grows closer.
A passing cargo ship, loaded in the same port, stops, lowers its ladder, and the captain, megaphone in hand, tells John to swim for it.
John calls back and asks for a tow. He needs the Freewind in Hong Kong. The captain caves in to the request but warns the Freewind might capsize. John says he'll take his chances, and the tow begins. Their journey is so horrendous that the monster waves are the height of the Freewind's mast. Eventually, they reach Hong Kong, where John pretends to be a small-time gold smuggler before flying to Manila. For months, he searches for a drug smuggler and finds a sponsor in a 14K Triad-run syndicate, the 14K being the largest and most notorious crime syndicate in the world. John's sponsor becomes his smuggling partner, and John must find a larger boat. He is going to become a heroin smuggler and destroy the syndicate from within.
