Some doors are meant to be opened.
Computer programmer David Jackson signed up to be an emergency foster parent more than twenty years ago, and in all that time nobody ever called. Then, at eleven o'clock one hot June night, a worn-out caseworker shows up at his Scottsdale door with two brothers, a thin folder, and a promise that it's only for one night.
Sam is thirteen and has spent five years protecting his little brother from a system that keeps losing them. Sean is eleven and has never owned a pair of brand new shoes. They say yes sir and no sir, they ask permission before they eat, and they're sure it's only a matter of time before David sends them away like everybody else has.
David doesn't know the first thing about raising kids. But he knows what it's like to wait on a bench for someone who never comes back. And he remembers the woman who once took in a scared twelve-year-old and told him, "When somebody knocks, you open the door."
Two days later, the police carry the boys out of his house in their socks.
What follows is a five-day race against the clock. One man fights to bring home two boys he has known for less than forty-eight hours, with the help of a fierce housekeeper, a night-shift supervisor with nothing left to lose, and a chore list folded into a tiny square and carried in a little boy's pocket.
The Foster Boys is a heartwarming story about found family, second chances, and the people who show up when it matters most.
Book One of The Foster Boys series.
