The First Body

The First Body introduces Chicago Police detective Bill Roper, a seasoned investigator who knows the South Side, knows the streets, and knows that the truth is rarely as clean as the paperwork says it is.

When a young man is found executed behind a twenty-four-hour laundromat, Roper and his partner, Cal Webb, begin what looks like a straightforward homicide investigation. But Henry Lyle's murder quickly opens into something far larger. A missing phone, a disabled alarm, erased surveillance footage, a frightened witness, and a trail leading through street operators, property developers, city contracts, police influence, and the church reveal a system built to protect itself.

As Roper follows the evidence, he discovers that the people surrounding the case operate in different worlds but are connected by the same thing: power. Businessman Curtis Marlowe moves comfortably between legitimate development projects and darker arrangements. Father James McNulty holds influence inside a parish deeply connected to Roper's own family. Political and police relationships begin to blur the line between public service and private protection. And somewhere inside the structure, people are making sure certain questions never get answered.

Roper doesn't wait patiently for permission. His instincts are sharp, his methods are sometimes unconventional, and his willingness to work outside normal procedure pushes the case forward-but also puts his career, his partnership, and his family at risk. As the investigation deepens, the case becomes personal, forcing Roper to confront not only who killed Henry Lyle, but what happens when the institutions meant to protect people become part of the machinery that harms them.

The murder at the center of The First Body is solved. The larger system is not.

That distinction sets the foundation for the Bill Roper Crime Series, a six-book crime novella series following one Chicago detective through violent crimes, political pressure, police corruption, business influence, personal loyalty, and the consequences of choosing truth over safety.

The First Body is a gritty, character-driven Chicago crime novella about murder, corruption, loyalty, consequence, and the price people pay when power decides the rules.
