Bridgman was born in Canada in 1865, but lived most of his life in the United States and studied under painter and sculptor Jean-Léon Gérôme at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, as well as under the famed painter Gustave Boulanger. He taught thousands of students over many years, including numerous notable artists such as Norman Rockwell, Will Eisner, Elizabeth Cady Stanton Blake, and Archie Boyd Teater.
