The Big Typescript

Das sogenannte "Big Typescript" ist Wittgensteins erster Versuch, die Gedanken seit seiner Rückkehr nach Cambridge und zum philosophischen Schreiben in einem Buch zu veröffentlichen und damit die "schweren Irrtümer" (Wittgenstein) seines Frühwerks zu korrigieren. Der Text ist, neben der "Logisch-Philosophischen Abhandlung" (dem "Tractatus") von 1918, der scheinbar Fertigste im Nachlass, mit einem Inhaltsverzeichnis, strukturiert in Kapiteln und Sektionen. Er ist jedoch ein Fragment, ohne Titel, ohne Motto und ohne Abschluss. Für Wittgenstein war es wichtig, "daß die Gedanken darin [in dem Buch] von einem Gegenstand zum andern in wohlgeordneter Reihe fortschreiten sollten." Es ist gerade diese von Wittgenstein am Ende verworfene Struktur des "Big Typescript", die den unschätzbaren Wert des Textes für das Studium und als Einführung in Wittgensteins Denken ausmacht. "Die herausragende Bedeutung des Big Typescript besteht darin, dass in ihm, kapitelweise geordnet, die in Wittgensteins Augen wertvollsten Arbeitsergebnisse der Jahre 1929 bis 1933 in einer von ihm selbst konzipierten Gliederung vorgelegt werden." Neue Zürcher Zeitung The so-called "Big Typescript" is Wittgenstein's first attempt to publish in a book his collected thoughts since his return to Cambridge and to philosophical writing, thus correcting the "serious errors" (Wittgenstein) of his early work. Among the texts in Wittgenstein's estate, the "Big Typescript" is the one that, next to the "Logisch-Philosophische Abhandlung" (the "Tractatus") of 1918, appears to be the most "finished", with a table of contents structured in chapters and sections. It is, however, a fragment, without either title, motto or conclusion. To Wittgenstein, it was important "that the thoughts in [the book] should progress from one subject to another in well-ordered consecutiveness." It is precisely this structure of the "Big Typescript", though ultimately rejected by Wittgenstein, which constitutes the immeasurable value of the text for the study of and as an introduction to Wittgenstein's thinking.
