Between 1920 and 1926, Boston is haunted by a string of elegant, baffling deaths among privileged young men connected to wealth, influence, and old social circles. What begins as a single scandal inside a fashionable hotel room becomes a years-long mystery that unsettles Beacon Hill, Back Bay, Copley Square, Boston Harbor, and the refined corridors of the Lenox Hotel.

Edward Ward, a respected London solicitor, returns to Boston after the Great War to manage maritime affairs and remain close to his daughter, Lily. Still grieving the deaths of his wife and son, Edward finds comfort in Lily's success. She is brilliant, compassionate, and admired, a Radcliffe graduate and Boston University law student whose work with vulnerable women, widows, immigrants, and veterans makes her one of the city's most trusted young reformers.

As more men die under strange circumstances, Detective Samuel Whitmore begins searching for connections others refuse to see. Reporter Maggie Doyle, chasing the defining story of her career, gives the killer a name that soon grips the city: the Boston Phantom. The victims appear unrelated at first, but a darker pattern slowly emerges. They move through the same elite gatherings, the same charitable events, the same protected institutions. Many also share a wartime history that casts their privilege in a harsher light.

Edward's world narrows as each death draws closer to the people and places he knows best. The Lenox, once his American refuge, becomes a place of suspicion, memory, and dread. Whitmore and Maggie increasingly believe Edward himself may be involved, especially when every murder seems to occur while he is in Boston. Edward, meanwhile, begins his own private investigation, collecting clippings, records, names, and fragments of evidence that point toward an answer he cannot bear to face.

This is a historical mystery about postwar grief, class privilege, family loyalty, and the terrible cost of denial. Boston's glittering society conceals wounds that never healed after the war, and the investigation becomes as much a family tragedy as a murder case. As the Phantom's pattern becomes undeniable, Edward must decide whether love means protection, silence, or finally telling the truth.
