In 2050, Texas is wealthier, more capable, and less dependent than it was a generation earlier. It is also still arguing about what those changes cost.

Journalist Elliott Ward travels across the state interviewing the people who lived through its transformation: an engineer who kept his final property-tax bill, a worker displaced by automation, a teacher who fought education reform, a nuclear operator who helped prevent a statewide blackout, a businessman caught in a new financial system, and others whose lives were changed by decisions that once seemed impossible.

Some believe Texas got it right. Some believe it went dangerously wrong. Most are no longer certain.

Told as a series of intimate interviews and recovered broadcasts, Texas 2050 explores a future built around functional sovereignty-the ability of a society to produce what it needs, govern what it builds, and cooperate with others without becoming helplessly dependent on them.

But every new capability creates new risks. Every reform produces winners and losers. And every generation eventually treats yesterday's political battles as ordinary life.
