Store of Ladies

"Store of Ladies" is a witty and sophisticated social satire by Louis Golding that explores the boundaries of class and the unpredictability of human desire. The story centers on Mrs. Horsham, a wealthy and refined widow living in the elite circles of London's Belgravia. Her world is turned upside down when she develops an unexpected and overwhelming infatuation with Alf, a handsome young boxer from a vastly different social background.

Golding masterfully follows the protagonist as she abandons her comfortable life to follow the object of her affection, leading to a series of comedic and poignant encounters. Through sharp prose and keen observation, the novel examines the tensions between duty, reputation, and the pursuit of passion. "Store of Ladies" remains a compelling example of early 20th-century British fiction, offering a humorous yet insightful look at the rigid social structures of the era and the lengths to which individuals will go for love-or the illusion of it. This work highlights Golding's ability to blend high-society comedy with deeper psychological themes, making it an essential read for fans of vintage literary fiction.
