We are entering a new era of sustainable design where the pressures of changing climate patterns and dwindling resources have led to a burst of creativity in green technology. Perhaps the most surprising recipients of this increased attention are skyscrapers, buildings historically seen as pillars of vanity. New projects make use of the latest advances in lighting and climate control to make them as energy efficient as possible. From the Edgar Street Towers which incorporate fiber-optics to transmit daylight into the building, to Torre Iberdrola in Bilbao whose bioclimatic skin has helped earn it high ratings from the U.S. Green Building Council. Not restricted solely to exemplars of green design, Skyscraper examines as well recent projects around the globe that are innovative in other ways with regards to materials, structure, texture and color. Includes such iconic buildings as One World Trade Center and work by such world leaders as Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture and Skidmore Owings & Merrill.
