Scandal and Religious Identity in Early Stuart England utilizes the case of John Barker, a puritan vicar executed in 1637 for his involvement in the murder of his infant child after a liaison with his wife's niece. His downfall soon became polemical fodder in scribal publications, with Puritans circulating defences of Barker and anti-Calvinists producing a Laudian condemnation of the minister. This book explores the compelling content of these scribal publications and their implications for our understanding of the public sphere and confessional politics in early modern England: news, information, and argument were an essential element in the religious and political environment. By also analyzing a remarkable cache of private documents produced in Northamptonshire in the 1630s, the authors put a human face on the public sphere. The Barker scandal allows us to view the clear demarcation that existed between Puritans and Laudians and explore what both thought of each other. Clearly written and engaging, this book represents a major statement of scholarship on religious identity formation and the use and interpretation of published and private sources. It captures the existing religious, social and political tensions on the eve of the English Civil War and illustrates how scandal can open windows into the mental and cultural worlds of the Stuart period.
