Hazel and Charlie always thought of themselves as good people, the kind of people who were willing to lend a hand to others. Although she had a career as an accompanist for silent films, Hazel also worked tirelessly as a suffragist, with Charlie's encouragement, to improve the lives of all women. She was proud of the fact that she had taught an immigrant friend to read, simply because it was a kindness. Charlie worked overtime to help his best friend when he was injured as a firefighter.
Hazel and Charlie both knew that they'd survived the past few years on faith, hope and charity. Their faith had sustained them through some rough patches. Hazel had lost her career, and had lost a child, but still held her head high. She hoped she'd be able to perform again as a pianist instead of staying home, and Charlie encouraged this very modern notion.
Their church and good friends provided childcare, and food when they needed the charity they offered. It felt as though they were surrounded by saints on earth until their lives were turned upside down and they faced a parent's worst nightmare. Had they been betrayed by people they trusted?
