"Why don't we read The Da Vinci Code?" asks one student, then another, and another, in courses on the Italian Renaissance. The question does more than challenge academic art history. It recognizes that another Renaissance flourishes in popular culture even if it's not discussed in the classroom. This other Renaissance is at last the subject of an important book, Reviving The Renaissance. It reproduces the best spin offs of the Mona Lisa, the Last Supper, and Michelangelo's David. Its essays draw on tourist ephemera, film, and popular fiction. But they also address questions that emerge only when we look from popular to high culturefrom the present to the past. The essays, all written expressly for the project, examine flash points in the popular Renaissance: the cult of the masterpiece; ideals of beauty; lost symbols; and codes of elite behavior.
