Eight-year-old Quanta meets a brass coin that refuses to pick heads or tails until she looks at it. A first picture-book step into the strange, true world of quantum physics.
Quanta is eight years old. She lives in a lane called Quantum Bazaar with her family of robots: Dadi-Bot the grandmother, Dada-Bot the grandfather who runs the chai stall, Auntie Supi who makes pickles, Auntie Dhooli who sweeps, the sleepy qubit Q0, the loud qubit Q1, and Schro the temple cat who is always fine.
One afternoon her grandmother opens an old box in the lab under the chai stall. Inside is a small brass coin. It shimmers. It does not pick heads. It does not pick tails. Quanta stares at it, and the coin snaps to one. She looks again, and it stays. She sets up a fresh coin and the shimmer is back.
What did the coin do? Why did looking change it? And why is this not a trick, but the simplest true thing about the world that scientists discovered a hundred years ago?
