Phytoremediation consists in the use of plants and their associated microbes for environmental cleanup. Over the past 10 years, this treatment has gained recognition as a cost-effective, non-invasive, alternative or complimentary technology to engineering-based remediation methods. In this volume, Dr. Yin reviews Phytoremediation technologies such as pollutant stabilization, extraction, degradation, or volatilization, along with their applicability to various inorganic (zinc and selenium) and organic (PAHs and oil) pollutants and to most suitable plant species. As the enhancement of the efficiency of phytoremediation depends on the knowledge of the processes that affect pollutant availability, rhizosphere processes, pollutant uptake, translocation, chelation, degradation, and volatilization, the author focuses on providing an insightful examination of what has been discovered so far about inorganic and organic pollutants. Moreover, he discusses the practical implications for designing phytoremediation strategies and the transgenic approaches to improve them.
