Revolution, a term so frequently heard in Cuba, has remained surprisingly unexplored; and yet, it is the referent against which not only Cuban politics, but morality, sociality, and history are measured. This book explores the Cuban Revolution not as an ideology, but as a form of practice and a fluid set of relations. Through an analysis of urban spaces such as urban agriculture, alternative medicine, migration, and self-employment, this book considers the complex interactions between the Cuban people and the state. These forms of revolutionary praxis also provide spaces of interaction with global environmental movements, international NGOs, and the market. Interrogating the meaning of 'Revolution' raises new questions about the nature of the Socialist state in Cuba today and its engagement with more global phenomena. The overarching themes of this book include the relationship between people and state, and a more categorical concern with the nature of 'the State.'
