Six Domains and 400 Items in One Reference
A 400-question working reference for the PE Environmental exam, grouped under its six official domains. Water, solid and hazardous waste, sustainability, air, site assessment and remediation, and environmental and occupational health all appear. Item counts use the midpoint of each published range and are not official weights. In this plan, water has 108 items and occupational health has 40.
Many tasks cross subjects, so items often ask for a decision as well as a result. A flow figure can change a treatment choice. A soil result can change the next site step. A rule can apply to one facility and not to another.
Eight Chapters Built Around Five Whole Tests
Tools You Will Reuse Under Time Pressure
Chapter 2 teaches the setup before the arithmetic. You list the target unit, the givens, the boundary, and the governing equation. Convert, compute once, and check sign and scale. Worked examples include detention volume, mass load, mixing, removal, and pumping power.
The five-step decision loop in Chapter 8 handles items that mix a calculation with a rule. It asks for the task, the governing relation, the boundary, the exceptions, and the action. The strongest-alternative test then asks which fact would make a close option correct.
Decisions Where a Citation Alone Falls Short
Rule items often turn on scope, not on recalling a section number. The tests ask whether guidance, a screening value, or an emission factor is enforceable. They also ask which program, facility type, and exception apply.
Numerical items keep units and basis in view. Flow and concentration become a mass rate before any comparison. Source emission rate stays separate from ambient concentration. Darcy flux stays separate from pore velocity unless porosity is given. A result below the reporting limit is treated as bounded, not as zero.
Who Will Use It
Engineers sitting for the PE Environmental exam are the intended readers. The book fits anyone who works across media and must justify a choice, not just compute a number.
Standing Apart From the Exam Owner
Neither NCEES nor any licensing board wrote or approved this book. It is an independent study resource, and its items are original, not copied from secure exams. The exam also uses formats beyond four-option items, and it does not simulate them. Confirm current rules and board requirements with official exam sources before you register. Nothing here replaces professional review of field work.
Working the Cycle
A dashboard after each test helps turn a miss into a named cause. You sort errors into fact, setup, unit, source, or choice. Repair that skill and try it again under changed evidence.
