Moving Big Boy 4014 is a riveting photographic account of the history of Union Pacific's legendary Big Boy 4-8-8-4 steam locomotives, first built in 1941 by the American Locomotive Company at Schenectady, New York. When Union Pacific finally retired the "Big Boys," one man reached out to the railroad and asked that a locomotive be donated to the Southern California chapter of the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society's collection at the Los Angeles County Fairgrounds in Pomona, California. The UP agreed and in January of 1962, the Union Pacific delivered Big Boy 4014 to Pomona for its retirement home. There the legendary locomotive sat on display, until Union Pacific came calling in 2013 - the railroad had determined the best-preserved Big Boy of those that remained was 4014, and they wanted it back in order to restore it to operation.
Moving Big Boy 4014 is the complete documentation of Union Pacific's Steam Crew's arrival in Pomona and the months-long process of preparing the engine for movement for eventual restoration in the Cheyenne steam shops. Professional photographer Steve Crise was on hand for the entire process, from laying the temporary track to 4014's first inch of movement in 52 years, all the way to the connection to the Metrolink tracks, movement to UP's West Colton Yards, and eventually 4014's return to the Cajon Pass on its journey to Cheyenne.
The book includes chapters on 4014's triumphant return to Southern California in 2019, just five years after its departure, plus later Union Pacific tours of 4014 in 2021, 2024 and the America 250 tour in 2026.
Moving Big Boy 4014 is a must-have book for Union Pacific steam enthusiasts and fans of the 4014 everywhere.
