Das Ergebnis ist auch für westliche Wissenschaftler eine kalte Dusche: Wir wissen viel weniger über den Propheten als angenommen - und das geläufige Bild von Mekka, vom Koran und vom frühen Islam insgesamt ist zu revidieren. Um den Propheten des Islam ranken sich viele Legenden, die mehr als ein Jahrhundert nach seinem Tod aufgezeichnet wurden. Von den Wundergeschichten abgesehen, wird das Grundgerüst dieser Erzählungen heute meist für historisch gesichert gehalten. Demgegenüber unterzieht Hans Jansen die Legenden einer schonungslosen historischen Überprüfung. Dabei greift er auf neueste archäologische und philologische Erkenntnisse zurück und berücksichtigt auch die Argumente der Forscher, die die Existenz Mohammeds überhaupt in Zweifel ziehen. Er geht der Bedeutung des Namens"Mohammed"nach, korrigiert unser bisheriges Bild von den Städten Mekka und Medina, beschreibt, wie Mohammed erste Anhänger gewonnen hat, und greift die heute lebhaft diskutierte Frage nach einer möglichen christlichen Prägung des Korans auf. Erstmals seit Jahrzehnten liegt mit diesem Buch wieder eine umfassende Mohammed-Biographie auf dem neuesten Forschungsstand vor.
