This book explores Arab military responses to the 2011 popular uprisings across the Middle East and North Africa. Despite numerous economic, social, and political similarities between countries, Arab militaries responded quite differently to domestic unrest. Arab militaries have fractured, remained unified, staunchly supported the regime, boldly stood with the protesters, or remained neutral. This book discusses the decision-making calculus of Arab militaries in times of social unrest and explains why the West's education and sales of military equipment to Arab militaries have an inconsequential impact on the domestic behavior of Arab militaries. Instead, Arab militaries are driven by domestic restraints and institutional interests. Finally, this book explains why Arab military responses to the recent spate of social uprisings across the region are ushering in a new era of civil-military relations in the Arab world.
