Marcus Aurelius ruled the Roman Empire through plague, war and a rebellion by one of his own generals. At night, much of it in army camps on the Danube frontier, he wrote reminders to himself in Greek: how to stay calm when people are unfair, how to keep working when he was tired, how to face death without fear. He never meant anyone to read them. Today the Meditations is a classic of Stoic philosophy and one of the most widely read books of wisdom ever written, a timeless guide to inner strength, self-discipline and peace of mind.
The problem is the language. Many editions reprint translations from the 1600s and 1800s, full of "thee" and "thou" and long, winding sentences. Readers get a few pages in, put the book down, and the wisdom they came for stays locked on the page.
This edition removes that barrier. It is a new translation made directly from the Greek, in plain modern English that says what Marcus meant. Hear him in his own words:
"At dawn, when you find it hard to get out of bed, keep this thought ready: 'I am getting up to do a human being's work.'" (Book 5.1)
"If something outside you causes you distress, it is not the thing that troubles you but your judgment about it. And you can wipe out that judgment right now." (Book 8.47)
