Math as a Language

Millions of adults freeze at a page of numbers, not because they cannot think, but because no one ever taught them to read the language.

• The ten digits are its alphabet and place value in its spelling.
• The order of operations is its grammar, and the equal sign states a balance rather than announcing an answer.
• Word problems are translation, fractions, decimals, and percentages are three dialects for the same values, and friendly numbers and benchmarks are the idioms fluent people use without thinking.

Ten chapters carry the language into real life:

• headlines,
• polls,
• inflation,
• interest rates and budgets;

the page anxiety so many learners carry from school;

• the grocery aisle,
• the restaurant bill,
• the home project and
• the simple questions that reveal whether a learner truly understands or has only memorized steps.

For parents, homeschoolers, teachers, and every adult who was ever told they were not a math person.
