This book explores the significance of the physicality of manuscripts and printed texts in the early modern period. It places a group of international scholars who are distinguished in their respective fields -- including many of those who first pioneered modern manuscript and print studies -- alongside emerging scholars of their generation. By comprehensively focusing on the material aspects of texts as a new and valuable way of reading and decoding meaning which complements and augments analyses of content, it provides a thorough reassessment of the intrinsic natures of and developing relationships between cultures of manuscript and print from the late sixteenth century through to 1730. Interdisciplinary in approach, a central purpose of the book is to foster vigorous dialogues between print and manuscript studies, critical bibliography, codicology and history of the book, palaeography and diplomatics, and social and cultural history. As the first book to concentrate on material readings of early modern culture it makes a significant contribution to the ways in which we read, interpret and situate texts.
