Leo's attic bedroom at 14 Willow Lane is usually quiet, boring, and filled with crumpled drawings of clumsy green dragons. But one night, the floorboards beneath his desk begin to hum.

Hidden beneath a frayed blue rug is a heavy brass ring. When Leo pulls it, he unleashes a rush of peppermint-scented wind and discovers a spiraling stone chute plunging into a breathtaking, impossible world: a colossal, living castle of shifting staircases, stained-glass windows, and floating starlight.

Waiting for him at the bottom is Doffy-a round, fluffy teal-blue creature with white paws, a tiny crooked wizard's hat, and a bright red heart on his side who is not a plush toy, thank you very much.

And Doffy has bad news. The castle's core magic, the Heartstone, has just been stolen.

Joined by Silas, a mysterious apprentice with glowing silver-white eyes, Leo must plunge deep into the labyrinthine Library of Lost Echoes and the shadowy sub-basements to stop a rogue saboteur before the castle's foundation collapses into the void. To save the castle-and his own bedroom floorboards-Leo is about to discover that he's much braver than he ever imagined.
