Loneliness in the workplace has received relatively littleattention in the literature. The research surrounding lonelinesstends to focus almost exclusively on personal characteristics asthe primary determinant of the experience, and largely ignores theworkplace as a potential trigger of loneliness. As such,personality tends to be overestimated as the reason for loneliness,whilst only modest emphasis is given to environmental factors, suchas organisational environments. Therefore, the aim of this studywas to explore the notion of loneliness in the workplace, with aparticular emphasis on examining the antecedents and outcomes ofits development in work contexts. The results from the studyindicate that environmental factors such as fear, lack of communityspirit, and value incongruence play a role in the experience ofwork-related loneliness and have an overall negative effect onemployee withdrawal behaviours and job satisfaction. The findingsfrom this study offer insight into possible areas fororganisational intervention and future research.
