Charlemagne’s youth, as told in the Middle Ages by chansons de geste, is a genuine adventure novel. Betrayed by illegitimate step-brothers determined to usurp his throne, young Charles, along with a handful of loyal companions, is forced to seek asylum in Spain, in Saracen King Galafre’s court. While there, he excels in his first weaponry lessons and earns his spurs as a knight. He will soon learn, however, that love’s arrows are more dreadful than lances and swords. Tenderly enamoured of the beautiful Galienne, the prince must, in order to win her, battle the terrifying giant Braimant and thwart the schemes of cruel Marsile, Galafre’s son, who will one day hatch a plan of betrayal at Roncevaux. Yet this exile cannot last forever: the Kingdom of France, bemoaning its fate under oppressive traitors who had seized the crown, await the return of its legitimate sovereign.In relating this very old story, the author was inspired by the narrative techniques and colourful diversity of medieval literature’s poetic forms.
