According to a nationwide survey conducted by the Vienna Chamber of Labour, a significant number of households in Austria hire private tutors for their children. Nevertheless, the primary responsibility for teaching the curriculum content should lie with the school (or with private tuition at home). In order to optimise one's own teaching and convey the learning content in a child-friendly and effective manner, this paper addresses the following questions: What are the latest scientific findings on the subject of learning? Which factors hinder the learning process? What concepts are there to promote learning? Why is private tuition usually more effective than standard lessons?
