Leading from the Frontline

Leading from the Frontline: A First-Line Supervisor's Guide

The most difficult promotion in law enforcement isn't to Chief-it's your first step into supervision.

Overnight, you go from being one of the officers on the shift to the person responsible for accountability, leadership, officer safety, critical decision-making, and community trust.

Leading from the Frontline is the practical leadership guide every new police corporal, sergeant, and first-line supervisor needs. It is equally valuable for lieutenants, command staff, FTOs, police trainers, and officers preparing for promotion who want to understand what effective leadership truly requires.

Drawing from nearly three decades of experience serving in city, county, state, federal, and international law enforcement-including as a two-time Chief of Police, former DEA Special Agent, and international U.S. Contingent Commander-Keith Grounsell delivers proven leadership principles, hard-earned lessons, and practical tools that can be applied immediately in the field. This is not theory. It is leadership as it actually happens.

Inside this book, you'll learn how to:

• Successfully transition from peer to supervisor
• Build trust and credibility while maintaining accountability
• Make sound, ethical, and legally defensible decisions under pressure
• Supervise use of force and reduce organizational liability
• Handle complaints, discipline, and critical incidents professionally
• Document performance to protect yourself, your officers, and your agency
• Build stronger teams, develop future leaders, and improve morale
• Navigate conflict while maintaining professionalism and authority

More than a traditional leadership book, Leading from the Frontline includes real-world case studies, leadership doctrine, scenario-based learning, reflection exercises, roll-call training topics, supervisor field tools, practical checklists, leadership assessments, and actionable resources designed to be used throughout your career.

While written specifically for law enforcement, the leadership principles in this book apply to supervisors and leaders in every profession where integrity, accountability, sound judgment, and decisive leadership matter.

Whether you're preparing for promotion, wearing your first set of stripes, supervising other leaders, or striving to become a more effective law enforcement professional, this book will sharpen your judgment, strengthen your leadership, and prepare you for the realities of modern policing.

Leadership doesn't begin at the top.

It begins on the Frontline.
