Als 1919 in Weimar das Staatliche Bauhaus eröffnete, wurde der Schweizer Maler und Kunsttheoretiker Johannes Itten (1888-1967) als einer der ersten Meister von Walter Gropius berufen. Itten prägte mit seinem Vorkurs maßgeblich die gestalterische Ausbildung am Bauhaus, bis heute setzen seine Erkenntnisse in der Farbenlehre Maßstäbe in der Kunstpädagogik und im Designbereich.
