Participation is still regarded as a positive label and thus as a term that carries a favourable connotation. This dissertation aims to contribute to the structuring of the field by defining participation more narrowly and proposing an alternative term for a specific type of theatrical work and elements of theme parks: the concept of involvement. The concept behind the term is developed through a comparison of theatrical works and elements of theme parks, examined on the basis of productions by SIGNA, Rimini Protokoll and Felix Ruckert, as well as various set-ups within theme parks. In comparing these two areas, which so far have been considered as separate, it becomes apparent that they share more in common than is generally assumed.
