Das 1537 herausgegebene Musiklehrbuch des Salzburger Pädagogen, Musiktheoretikers und Komponisten Johannes Stomius liegt erstmals als vollständige Edition samt Übersetzung, Notentranskription und Kommentar vor. Im Mittelpunkt steht die Erforschung der hervorstechenden Merkmale des bisher wenig bekannten Traktats. Stomius teilt offenbar den Gesang in 'mollis' und 'durus', eine für die erste Hälfte des 16. Jahrhunderts sensationelle Definition und gibt dazu praktische Singanweisungen. Zudem wird die Biographie des Autors, soweit es die Quellenlage zulässt, umfassend dargelegt. Die langjährige Unterrichtstätigkeit des Stomius in dessen Poetenschule gab den Anstoß, die Entwicklung des Schulwesens mit besonderer Berücksichtigung der humanistischen Musikpädagogik zu beleuchten und bringt überdies wertvolle Einblicke in das Salzburger Kultur- und Geistesleben des 16. Jahrhunderts.
