A research was conducted to clarifythe bioavailability and uptake of chromium inearthworms, carabid beetles and shrews in thesurroundings of stainless steel works located in theNorthern Finland. Within the study area chromium andother metal contaminants have accumulated into thesoil system due to four decades of aerial depositionsfrom the industrial activities. The effects ofmultiple metal exposure were also studied in shrews, and some population parameters were measured toreceive a more holistic understanding of thewellbeing of the animals in the metal contaminatedarea. Based on the results it is concluded that partof the chromium loading in the soil humus layer, although a relatively small fraction compared tototal concentration, is available for uptake by thestudy organisms. In general, earthworms were found tobe most affected by the elevated metalconcentrations, in particular within one km distancefrom the works. There was also some indication ofadverse effects in carabid beetles. However, relatively limited responses were observed in shrews.
